15 TV breakups that left viewers completely devastated

Jake loved Olivia so much that he was willing to play second fiddle forever. And for a minute, it actually seemed like it was going to work. When it didn't? Viewers were left devastated. 

I don't think anyone expected these two disasters to work, but somehow they made chaos look like love. Well, until they didn't. Their split was hard to watch, and still is ... even if it is scripted. 

Christina literally stood at the altar in her wedding dress, begging for someone to cut her out of it after Burke left her. If that didn't crack your soul wide open, I don't know what to tell you. 

Buffy and Angel were the blueprint for every doomed supernatural couple that came after. Their breakup didn't just hurt; it sort of invented teenage heartbreak. At least we'd say so. 

Ross and Rachel were the couple you thought would be endgame ... until that dreaded "we were on a break" conversation happened. Suddenly, love felt way more complicated than just lobsters and coffee dates. 

Jess and Nick were a mess, but they were our mess, and watching them split felt like having the rug pulled out from under us. Suddenly, there was nothing left to hold on to. 

He could fix a soccer team, but not his marriage. Watching Ted let Michelle go (with a smile, at least) was heartbreak in its most polite, British form. 

Best friends, soulmates, and queens of William McKinley High School. When Santana and Brittany hit rough patches, it didn't feel like a simple breakup ... it was like the show's heart cracked a little. 

Toxic? Certainly. Steamy? Always. Soulmates? Probably. 

However, when Olivia finally said "no more," it felt like we were all experiencing heartbreak. 

Carrie and Aidan's breakup is proof that sometimes the nice guys do finish last. (He did deserve better, though.)

This breakup hit us harder than we expected, mainly because nobody saw Tara's death coming, and clearly, Willow didn't either.

These two had a complicated, on-again, off-again romance, but their split in the final season was dramatic! They loved each other, but their careers and lives just didn't align. Even though they ended up together in the finale, they divorced some time later, which ruined me and millions of other viewers. 

Their brief breakup in the midst of a zombie apocalypse hit way harder than expected. Watching them drift apart, even for a moment, felt like the end of something that should've been untouchable. 

Shawn and Angela were so close to making things work, but life got in the way. Shawn exhibited the ultimate act of love by encouraging Angela to travel Europe with her father, even if it effectively ended their relationship. It's still a tough pill to swallow after watching them grow throughout the series. 

Jane and Michael had been through so much together, and their breakup felt like we were losing our favorite couple just when they finally figured it out. Heartbreaking doesn't even begin to cover it.
