We've made the case that "Conclave" is the film of 2024, owing to popularity, Oscars success, and it falling backwards into cultural relevance after the death of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, also known as Pope Francis. Edward Berger's on a bit of a heater, as his film prior to "Conclave" was "All Quiet on the Western Front," a German movie that won Best International Feature at the Oscars.
Now, Berger has clinched Brad Pitt for his next movie.
Well, we should say his next film after his next film. Berger is a working director who isn't precious about starting his next project, and he already has a 2025 film on the schedule. That would be the Netflix movie "The Ballad of a Small Player." It's a thriller starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton about a gambler and a con artist who flee from Britain to Macau. Yeah, that's going to be a hit for Netflix.
However, next up in terms of production is "The Riders," which is being produced and distributed by A24. Now, Berger has Pitt signed on to star. This is another adaptation of a novel, which is Berger's specialty. "The Riders" is a 1994 work by Australian author Tim Winton. It's a story about a man who moves with his family to Ireland, and then has to search for his wife after she goes missing. Seems up Berger's alley. Also, with Berger, Pitt, and A24 involved, seems like Oscars fare.
"The Riders" won't start filming until 2026, but in 2025 you have "The Ballad of a Small Player" and Pitt's "F1" to tide you over.
