Hugh Grant revisits his 1995 Divine Brown scandal: 'I was just an idiot'

When Drew Barrymore asked Hugh Grant if he remembered how the two of them first met, Grant drew a blank.

Perhaps that's because he had blacked out 1995 from his memory entirely.

The now-60-year-old actor was caught acting lewdly in a car with a sex worker known as Divine Brown in Los Angeles while dating Elizabeth Hurley. Barrymore gave him a hint. "We actually didn't meet in person," she said. "I reached out to you."

And it all came rushing back to Grant:

"Oh my God, you did! You were so nice. You were so nice. Yes, it was during the dark days of my Divine Brown scandal. I was just an idiot. I was a grown-up idiot who got caught by the police. I was back in England with 5,000 members of the press around the borders of my farm, and I opened a letter from you that was very supportive and nice. It was very cheering-up. And I thought, 'I love Drew Barrymore.' Words of support from an actress I didn't know in Hollywood was lovely. So, you'll always have a place in my heart."

Grant also revisited the embarrassing sex scandal on the Marc Maron podcast in March, where he pointed toward having just seen the screening for Nine Months and feeling he was "so atrocious" in it that it put him in "not a good frame of mind" (h/t Page Six).

Back on The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore and Grant reviewed their time co-starring in Music and Lyrics (2007) as well as behind-the-scenes looks at his other rom-com blockbusters and how he got into a more sinister mindset for HBO limited series The Undoing.
