Meet the new face of college football: Chad Powers, portrayed by the one and only Glen Powell. Hulu's new half-hour comedy comes from Powell and co-creator Michael Waldron. Additionally, the duo co-wrote the pilot and executive-produced.
The first two episodes will premiere on September 30, with new episodes streaming weekly on Tuesdays. The series is based on the sketch produced by NFL Films and Omaha Productions, which aired on ESPN+ as part of the Eli's Places series.
When bad behavior nukes hotshot QB Russ Holliday's college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.
The rest of the cast includes Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny, and Steve Zahn as Jake Hudson.
"As we really started thinking about it, we actually got quite, quite excited," Waldron recalled while speaking with For The Win about the "insane" idea of adapting the Eli Manning skit. "It was like, we can't be the college football show where the college football looks awful. It has to look awesome. Our aspiration was, this should be the best football anybody's ever seen."
Powell worked with trainers and football consultants to prepare for the role. Waldron described the actor's football mastery as "Frustratingly good," before adding, "He's a super handsome dude, incredibly pleasant. He's also a great writer. He's also a terrific writer. His family is lovely. Then he's just got a great arm. I'm like, God, man. Leave some for the rest of us."
Executive producers also include Manning, Omaha Productions' Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz, Ben Brown, ESPN, Adam Fasullo for Anomaly Pictures, Luvh Rakhe, and Tony Yacenda, who directs.
