Kate Winslet on possible second season for 'Mare of Easttown': 'Conversations are happening'
There is hope for more Mare of Easttown.
Kate Winslet won the award for best actress in a limited series for her work as Detective Mare Sheehan in HBO's breakout Mare of Easttown at Sunday night's 73rd Primetime Emmys.
The Brad Ingelsby creation claimed four Emmys, including best supporting actress in a limited series for Julianne Nicholson and best supporting actor in a limited series for Evan Peters. The series earned 16 nominations overall. Afterward, Winslet discussed the possibility of a second season "because the success of the show really did surprise us all."
"Conversations are happening, but I think until scripts are in place that we can really respond to, and know what a full story of a Season 2 might be and where Mare goes," the Oscar-winning actress said, per Deadline. "We're not going to match what we already did, nor should we try, but we should do at least provide something that's as captivating and entertaining as Season 1."
The 45-year-old star has alluded to a possible second season before, as has HBO and HBO Max's Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys.
"I would absolutely love to play Mare again," Winslet told TVLine in late May. "I miss her. I really do. It's the strangest thing. I feel like I'm in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role. ... There's something very addictive about Mare, because she's so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her."
"If Brad felt like he had a story to tell that felt like it would be at the same level, I think everybody would be open to it," Bloys told Variety the following week. "Right now, he doesn't have that story. Who knows? We'll have to wait to see if they come up with something they're dying to tell."
Mare premiered April 18 and completed its seven-episode arc on May 30. The series finale—as it was billed at the time but may no longer be—crashed HBO Max.
