Prime Video cancels 'The Bondsman' after first season

Unfortunately, Prime Video has decided to cancel Erik Oleson's The Bondsman starring Kevin Bacon. The first season was a total of eight episodes, which all premiered on April 3. Jennifer Nettles, Beth Grant, Damon Herriman, Maxwell Jenkins, and Jolene Purdy made up the rest of the cast.

Murdered bounty hunter Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon) is resurrected by the Devil to trap and send back demons that have escaped from the prison of Hell. By chasing down those demons with the help and hindrance of his estranged family, Hub learns how his own sins got his soul condemned -- which pushes him to seek a second chance at life, love, and country music.

The season finale, which will now serve as a series finale, ended with a pretty big cliffhanger. Erik Oleson told TV Insider that was the plan all along, explaining, "We’ve got some really fun stuff planned, depending on whether or not the show is able to [return]. I made it intentionally difficult for Amazon to not give us Season 2 by ending it the way I did because I’m evil."

Nettles loved "leaving it on the cliffhanger," sharing, "The stakes for Hub — where he’s just like, 'Wait a minute. So in order to save Maryanne, this woman that I love, I have to serve the demon that is inhabiting her?' — I think those are pretty high freaking stakes. So that’s exciting."

Additionally, Bacon was hoping for a second season, expressing, "We’ve already started to talk about it … There’s a lot about Hub’s relationship to Maryanne that has to kind of drive the show. I think that he loves her, and he knows that he f---ed that up and that he would do anything to get her back, even if he doesn’t want to admit it to her or to himself or anybody else in the world. I do think that’s in his core. So I think the exploration of that, given the fact that she’s now possessed, is gonna be interesting."

All episodes of The Bondsman are streaming on Prime Video.
