The death of longtime Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was a shocker, and it led to a remarkable, moving tribute concert. Of course, the band wasn't going to hang it up, so they needed a drummer to replace Hawkins to tour and for any future album releases. They landed on Josh Freese, a steady hand who has been a session and touring drummer for decades. Well, Freese's time with Foo Fighters has already concluded. After two years with the band, Freese has been let go.
As Freese's Instagram post noted, the band (one assumes Dave Grohl, though it would be funny if Grohl had Pat Smear work as his hatchet man) said they were going to go in a different direction and his time with the band was over. All things considered, he seems chill about it.
That makes sense in a couple ways. Freese has been drumming for years and has over 400 albums to his name, both with bands and as a session drummer. He's drummed for punk band The Vandals, Devo, A Perfect Circle, Guns N' Roses, and more. Once you've worked with Axl Rose for years, a professional call about going in a different direction wasn't primed to phase Freese.
On the flip side, was it ever likely Foo Fighters' long-term solution on drums would be Freese? There's a reason he's spent his career freelancing and doing session work. Not because he's not skilled, but because of what his specific skill is. He's the kind of consummate professional who could step in at a moment of chaos and uncertainty and not mess things up. If Grohl and the band feel like things are more stable now, they might want a drummer that is more of a fit, with more long-term possibilities. Sure, Grohl is 56, but nobody seems to stop touring these days. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend are still out there. So is Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen.
Foo Fighters will figure something out, and Freese will keep on gigging. Nobody "wins," but nobody really loses here either.
