AJ Brown throws Jalen Hurts under the bus

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown did nothing to dispel speculation about his happiness on Sunday following the team’s loss to the Denver Broncos.

Brown seemingly gave up on a play late in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Denver at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The wide receiver had beaten safety Talanoa Hufanga and had what appeared to be a clear touchdown as long as quarterback Jalen Hurts found him. However, Brown slowed up on the route, and was unable to catch up to Hurts’ throw, spoiling a potential touchdown.

After the game, Brown was asked about the play, and he pinned the blame squarely on Hurts.

“From my point of view, it just missed,” Brown told reporters. “It’s not that I didn’t think the ball was coming. When I looked up, I didn’t see the ball. When I looked back, I didn’t see the ball, and then the ball was thrown. It was just a miss.”

Brown certainly makes it sound like he and Hurts were not on the same page and that Hurts just missed him. That is unlikely to create any warm feelings in the locker room, as Brown has been signaling his unhappiness with the team’s offense in recent weeks.

The play loomed large in the game. Had Brown caught the pass, he likely had a touchdown that would have put the Eagles up 24-3 late in the third quarter. Instead, the Eagles did not score again for the remainder of the game, and the Broncos staged a rally by scoring 18 unanswered points in a 21-17 victory.

Brown cannot accuse the Eagles of freezing him out of the offense. He was targeted eight times in the game and caught five of them for 43 yards, but he missed what might have been the potential biggest play of the game.

Things still are not bad enough that the Eagles might entertain a trade of Brown. However, he has ensured that his relationship with Hurts will be under the microscope for at least another week.
