Ravichandran Ashwin went unsold at the UAE-based ILT20 auction on Wednesday, which came as a huge surprise. Reportedly, Ashwin wanted to play in the ILT20 after his retirement from international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). The ILT20 auction was a letdown for Ashwin, especially after he joined Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).
Ashwin, who had a base price of USD 120,000, was absent from the accelerated auction but could still be added as a wildcard selection. Fans opined on the lack of interest from franchises, with some suggesting that the spinner may have opted out of the auction at the last moment.
“We’re hearing that he might have withdrawn from the auction, which is quite a shock. I mean, you really need to read the room,” Simon Doull said.

Ravichandran Ashwin has gone unsold in #ilt20auction
Wow they really mean business. And it's the right decision too. pic.twitter.com/KrMWZo0UXH
“You need to understand what’s happening out there, especially with all that money still available, with three or four teams having over $400,000 left in their budget. I don’t think they came here with the intention of not spending; the money is there to be used. If he pulled out, then he clearly hasn’t read the situation. I believe teams would have gone for him,” he added.
The dates of the ILT20 would have clashed with the Bash League (BBL) schedule, making it difficult for Ashwin to play in both leagues.
The experienced Indian spinner probably chose to miss the ILT20.
