The Calgary Stampeders are among the most intriguing teams heading into the 2025 CFL season and are making interesting moves ahead of free agency.
After trading away quarterback Jake Maier to Saskatchewan and trading for former CFL Most Outstanding Player Vernon Adams Jr., the Stampeders have released Mike Rose and James Vaughters, two of their defensive starters from 2024.
Rose and Vaughters both played 18 games along the defensive line in 2024. Rose earned 19 tackles, six sacks, and an interception last season, while Vaughters tallied 32 tackles and five sacks.
"We thank Mike and James for everything they’ve done for the Stampeders organization over the years," Stamps head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson said. "Decisions like these are extremely difficult and an unfortunate part of the business of professional sports.
“The contributions of Mike and James to the Red and White won’t be forgotten, and we wish them both all the best," he added.
Rose leaves the Stamps after four straight seasons of being named a CFL West Division All-Star. He has been with the team since 2017, totaling 143 tackles and 36 sacks through 80 games in his seven seasons.
Vaughters’ release comes after two consecutive seasons with the team. He spent four in total with Calgary and saw some NFL time in between. He played 51 games with the Stamps, earning 97 tackles and 21 sacks.
After making the playoffs in 18 of the last 20 years, the Stampeders took a step back in 2024, missing the postseason for the first time since 2004. They will be an interesting team to follow this offseason, with Calgary undoubtedly looking to find some defensive starters and even some receivers in free agency.
