The University of Alabama baseball team provided an optimistic update on Mac Guscette Sunday night, hours after the catcher was hit in the throat by a wild pitch and collapsed on the field during a loss to No. 1 LSU.
Crimson Tide coach Brad Bohannon said Guscette was "alert and doing well" after the scary incident, which resulted in a hospitalization.

"He took a direct blow to the throat on a pitch that was thrown in the dirt. He's alert and doing well. They'll run some tests to make sure he's ok. With the information that I have we think that Mac is going to be ok.

According to Mikey DiLullo of The Tuscaloosa News, the seventh inning wild pitch "bounced under Guscette's catcher's mask and into his neck, and the junior collapsed after trying to stand up." The Florida transfer tried to walk off the field, but was "ultimately carried off and into the training room behind the Tigers' dugout by the trainers."
In 32 games (28 starts) this season, Guscette has six home runs and 25 RBIs with a .289/.394/.533 slash line.
Top-ranked LSU (35-8, 15-5) swept the Crimson Tide (30-15, 9-12) in the three-game weekend series, including a 13-11 in the finale on Sunday.
