The Tennessee Vols are set to take on Miami (OH) on Friday evening in the Knoxville Regional.
Tennessee is expected to start LHP Liam Doyle against the RedHawks.
Some Vols fans have questioned the decision to start Doyle against the No. 4 seed in the regional, suggesting instead that Tennessee's ace should be saved for a "tougher" game.
Of course, nothing is guaranteed in baseball. The better roster doesn't always win. This isn't like the first round of March Madness when a No. 1 seed can cruise to victory while resting most of their top players in the second half.
Tennessee has to treat the game against Miami (OH) just like it's a game against Texas or Vanderbilt or Arkansas. The last thing the Vols want is to be in the losers side of the bracket on Saturday fighting to keep their season alive.
The Cincinnati Bearcats and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons are the other two teams in the Knoxville Regional.
Cincy head coach Jordan Bischel joined BearcatJournal this week to preview the upcoming weekend and he offered some advice (or a warning, however you want to take it) to Tennessee ahead of the Vols' matchup against the RedHawks.
"They're good, they're really good," said Bischel when asked about Miami (OH). "The top of their lineup is real. They're threats to hit it out of the park. They've got good hitting approaches. We obviously didn't see their weekend arms during the season, but the guy they'll start against Tennessee, the numbers are real. But they're a top 100 RPI (team). When you get those four seeds that are No. 175 in the RPI, you might be able to save an arm or whatever. But Tennessee is gonna have to go after that one. They're tough. It's an experienced top of the order that does a good job."
RHP Cooper Katskee will start against the Vols on Friday. Katskee, who started his career at Indiana, pitched in 15 games (with nine starts) this season for the RedHawks while pitching to a 2.66 ERA. The Colorado native gave up just six home runs in 81.1 innings.
Bischel's comments about Miami (OH) should help explain why Tony Vitello is planning to start Doyle (which he noted during an appearance on 104.5 The Zone's 3HL this week) on Friday evening in Knoxville despite some fans thinking he should save the southpaw for later in the weekend.
