The Tennessee Volunteers have had unprecedented success over the last five years under Tony Vitello, with the Vols looking to make the College World Series for the fourth time in the last five years if they can top the Arkansas Razorbacks in this weekend's Super Regional in Fayetteville.
Naturally, that's helped make Tennessee an attractive destination for players looking to transfer from their current programs. Andrew Fischer and Liam Doyle both came over from Ole Miss this year and have had a massive impact on Tennessee's season.
That was the case last year with third baseman Billy Amick. However, it was a bit more of an interesting path for Amick to Knoxville. The Vols defeated Clemson in the 2023 regional, and Amick was a part of that Tiger team that Tennessee helped eliminate. Amick then made the jump to Knoxville for the 2024 season, and he became an integral part of the Vols' championship roster before getting drafted in the second round by the Minnesota Twins. Worked out pretty well for him and for Tennessee, suffice to say.
In that same "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" vein, Wake Forest reliever Josh Gunther is entering the transfer portal, per Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball.
TRANSFER: @WakeBaseball RHP Josh Gunther has entered the Transfer Portal. Gunther, who was up to 96 w/ his FB and had a 50% whiff rate w/ CU and 46% whiff w/ CH, had 47 strikeouts in 29 innings and 26 apps for the #Deacs in 2025.

Gunther took a major step forward for the Demon Deacons from his freshman to sophomore season in 2025, lowering his ERA from 6.32 to 3.41. This year, he threw 29.0 innings with 47 strikeouts to 18 walks. Against Tennessee, the righty threw a scoreless 1.1 innings with 3 strikeouts in Wake's 7-6 win on Sunday.
Tennessee certainly could use another reliable arm in the bullpen, and Gunther has shown against the ACC - and against a volatile Tennessee lineup - that he could be a useful option.
We'll see in the coming weeks if Vitello can do the same with Gunther that he did with Amick - show him that it's a better experience to be playing in orange than against it. And the raucous Tennessee crowd and wild Lindsey Nelson Stadium environment last weekend that Gunther experienced firsthand certainly wouldn't hurt Vitello's pitch either.
