What a scary and unreal moment it must have been at George Dobson Field, where the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Eagles play their home baseball games.
The University released a statement via Facebook that one of its players — left unidentified — was struck by a stray bullet while playing in a game. That player was taken to the hospital and is thankfully in stable condition, but what a PTSD-inducing moment that must have been for all involved, and especially for the player.
The Texarkana Police Department reported in a Facebook post that the shooting occurred nearby the field and that the unnamed player, an 18-year-old male, was standing in the bullpen area when he was hit by the stray bullet. It was around 5:30 p.m.
More information was quickly provided and in fact, the police department was able to issue felony warrants for the shooters involved in the incident.
"We initially received several calls of shots fired on Lynda Street, which is in a neighborhood just west of Spring Lake Park. Moments later, we received a 911 call that a baseball player at the park had collapsed and may have been shot. We were able to almost immediately determine that the two incidents were related, so as some officers were at the ball field rendering aid to the victim, other officers were on Lynda Street looking for any evidence or witnesses," the department wrote.
"Those officers located several spent shell casings in the front yard of a residence there. Our detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the house on Lynda and determined that the incident started as a disturbance there that lead to two men shooting at each other in front of the house. One of those errant rounds traveled about 400 yards and struck the innocent victim at the ball field."
The two shooters had apparently fled the area before officers arrived on the scene, but other arrests were made after officers obtained search warrants for the house as well as several vehicles on the street.
