Santos still needs to put pen to paper and sign with Minnesota, but his commitment already puts him among some of the highest-rated high school recruits in the modern era of Gophers hoops. The 247Sports Composite currently rates him as the 78th-best player in the country.

Minnesota has signed just six top-75 prep prospects in the 247Sports Composite since 2008. Kris Humphries (19), Royce White (29), Rodney Williams (49), Daniel Oturu (50), Amir Coffey (50) and Isaiah Washington (62). Ben Johnson's highest-rated high school prospect, according to the same metric, was Pharell Payne at No. 123. Nolen Anderson was No. 111 in last year's cycle, and Santos is a new best for Niko Medved at Minnesota.

Santos is a true big-time recruit. He represents the Brazil national team, and he recently was part of a third-place finish in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup in Mexico. He averaged 14.3 points and 8.7 rebounds across six games in that tournament. He's a productive prep player on the high school and AAU circuit. He certainly has the potential to join a Big Ten rotation as soon as 2027-28.

Future roster outlook

All 15 players on the Gophers' 2026-27 roster will have the option to return for the 2027-28 season, thanks to the NCAA's new five-for-five eligibility rules. Santos is the Gophers' first commitment in the 2027 high school cycle, which means they would currently have 16 players on next year's roster if everyone returned.

Anyone who has followed college sports in the last five years knows it's incredibly naive to think a program would go an entire offseason without a single transfer portal exit. Any good program in the current landscape is thinking about these things already. There's a lot of time between now and next year's transfer portal window, but Santos gives Minnesota some flexibility.

What's next?

After missing out on Maple Grove star Baboucarr Ann, who committed to Wisconsin, you could argue that Minnesota landed a better prospect. Given their roster construction outlook, the 2027 class might be a smaller cycle.

Two players to keep an eye on are Midwest point guard Jaxson Davis and Texas guard Malik Olajuwon, who's the son of basketball Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. Minnesota has officially offered each player this summer, and they appear to be in the mix for their commitments, but they can take a more measured approach in this year's cycle, given the change to eligibility rules.
