Arizona's Caleb Love burns Duke one last time

When No. 12 Arizona (2-0) guard Caleb Love arrived at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Friday night to take on No. 4 Duke (1-1), it was in a different shade of blue and after a much longer trip than he's used to.

But once the former North Carolina Tar Heel took the floor, a traditional Love game ensued. He scored 11 loud points highlighted by a buzzer-beating three at the end of the first half.

He also shot just 3-for-10 from the field and 1-for-5 from deep while committing six turnovers, but was perfect from the free throw line in the final minute and delivered the game-sealing steal and assist to KJ Lewis en route to a 78-73 win.

Then he waved goodbye to the Cameron Crazies for a final time, finishing his career 3-1 in Durham.

Love told the media after the game, "Obviously, it was on my mind for a little minute."

"As soon as I saw they were on the schedule my eyes got bigger, but we came in and handled business. That's all that matters."

Between his time at UNC and Friday night's result, Love must be one of Duke fans' most hated players in a long time. Aside from his 75-percent win rate at Duke, he's contributed to some of the most painful losses in recent Blue Devil history.

Led by first-year head coach Hubert Davis in March 2022, Love and the Tar Heels were on the NCAA Tournament bubble when they traveled to No. 4 Duke for legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski's final home game. With an army of former players on hand to take in the historic contest, Love and Co. spoiled the party with a dominant 94-81 win.

UNC would make the Big Dance as an 8-seed and make a miracle run to the Final Four, where Love drilled perhaps the most clutch shot in the rivalry's storied history to ice an 81-77 win to send Coach K into retirement.

One year into the Jon Scheyer era the Blue Devils were still undefeated at home. Then Love came calling on Friday to end the streak.

And while Love's career in Chapel Hill ended on a sour note leading to his transfer, he said something that should give UNC fans the warm and fuzzies.

"I'm a Tar Heel for life. Regardless of our differences and what happened in the past, I've still got love for Tar Heel nation."
