The stakes for an important recruiting weekend got even higher on Friday for Michigan baskeball as it was reported that Oakland forward Trey Townsend will be taking an official visit.

Towsend is a 6-foot-6 forward who won the Horizon Player of the Year award this past season after scoring 17 points per game and grabbing eight rebounds for Oakland. He scored 17 points in the upset win over Kentucky and followed it up with 30 in a loss to North Carolina State.

Another elite transfer will visit Michigan basketball

According to Joe Tipton, Townsend will visit Michigan basketball this Sunday. The forward would be an intriguing fit for Dusty May’s system, especially averaging 3.1 assists per game. May talked about how his teams play “modern” basketball. That means they want shots at the rim and from the 3-point line.

Townsend shot 37 percent from the 3-point line last season and 38 percent in 2022-23. He’s got one year of eligibility left and Michigan basketball has an opening at the three. Terrance Williams III said a return was possible but Townsend feels ready-made for this system. Adding him alongside 7-footer Vlad Goldin, who has been trending to Michigan basketball with expert projections, and Danny Wolf, a 7-footer from Yale.

Michigan was the favorite for Wolf at one point. He’s expected to visit North Carolina next weekend, so this is going to be a crucial visit for the Wolverines. It’s their best chance to lock down these commitments. But if they could add all three plus Trey Donaldson and maybe Johnell Davis down the road, this team will have the makeup needed to make the NCAA tournament, assuming it can find some playable depth.

You can sense the excitement from Michigan fans though and there hasn’t even been one transfer commitment yet. It should come soon though and if all goes well, maybe as soon as this weekend.
