The Arizona State Sun Devil basketball team now has its highest-ranked recruiting class in history after flipping five-star, 6-foot-5 guard Joson Sanon from its biggest rival, Arizona.
Sanon announced the news on his Instagram, and it comes right after Caleb Love posted that he was returning to Arizona instead of declaring for the NBA Draft. The Vermont Academy (VT) product originally chose the Wildcats over Kentucky, Boston College, Kansas, UConn and Overtime Elite.
Sanon captioned his Instagram post: “add STATE to it #ForksUp.”
Arizona lost both Sanon and four-star guard Jamari Phillips today with the news of Love coming back. Sanon reacted to Love’s return to Arizona less than a half and hour before he flipped:
LOVE IT

247 Sports’ composite ranking has Sanon has the No. 24 prospect and No. 5 shooting guard in the 2024 class after he originally re-classified from the 2025 class. The commitment saw ASU’s 2024 class jump up to No. 3 nationally behind only Duke and Alabama.
Sanon joins five-star center Jayden Quaintance as coach Bobby Hurley’s second five-star recruit in the 2024 class. Quaintance also re-classified from the 2025 class and is ASU’s highest-rated recruit in history, as the No. 9-rated player nationally and No. 2 center. Sanon, already 18 years old, is eligible for the 2025 NBA Draft, while Quaintance will only be 17 when next season begins, so he will have to play two years of college before he is eligible.

The Sun Devils have two other four-star freshmen forwards committed: 6-foot-8 Amier Ali and 6-foot-8 Sammie Yeanay. Three-star, 6-foot-4 guard Bo Aldridge will also be heading to Tempe in the fall. These three all played high school basketball in Arizona and have all signed their letter of intents, while Sanon and Quaintance have not.
Arizona State’s Bobby Hurley is killing it on the recruiting trail!

Arizona State’s only big names that are returning are guard Adam Miller and center Shawn Phillips. The Sun Devils have five transfers coming in on top of the high school recruits: 6-foot-8 forward Brandon Gardner (from USC), 6-foot-6 forward BJ Freeman (from Milwaukee), 6-foot-1 guard Alston Mason (from Missouri State), 6-foot-9 center Basheer Jihad (from Ball State) and 6-foot-2 guard Austin Nunez (from Ole Miss).
247 Sports scouting director Adam Finkelstein broke down what Sanon will bring to the table:
“Sanon is a volume scoring wing who is capable of getting his shot at multiple levels. His best weapon over the years has been his mid-range pull-up game, with good lift into his release. Within the last year, we’ve seen his range extend out to the three-point line with the same ability to rise-up into his shot. He’s very adept at getting to his spots and capable of getting downhill in the open floor, but doesn’t put quite as much pressure on the rim when operating within the half-court.
Sanon is most comfortable as the offensive focal point. He’s a potent scorer who can put points on the board in bunches, but has a tendency to hunt his shots with a high-volume style and needs to develop into a more willing ball-mover who can impact the game in ways beyond scoring.
On the opposite end, he tends to defend in spurts right now, showing glimpses of using his size and strength to be effective, but not yet committing to that mentality on a consistent basis. Physically, he measured in at 6-foot-4 without shoes at last June’s Nike Elite 100 with a 6-foot-6 wingspan, giving him solid positional size but somewhat limited length.”
