ASU’s X-factor for Sunday’s game against Oklahoma State

Arizona State men’s basketball is looking for its first win in February when they travel to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State on Sunday. ASU’s struggle comes from its offensive struggles, shooting under 40% from the field the past two games.

A solution for head coach Bobby Hurley would be the dynamic playmaking and shooting of redshirt senior guard Adam Miller. The second-year Sun Devil is the X-factor against the Cowboys, who have struggled to defend against the 3-point shot.

Miller has been the most consistent offense for ASU, being the only Sun Devil to score 10+ in the past five games. He leads the team in every efficiency stat but only averages 7.6 shots a game. The LSU transfer has only five games where he took double-digit shots. During those games, Miller averaged 14.2 points on 55.8% shooting.

In three of the past four games, Miller has recorded 10+ shot attempts and seems to become more comfortable in ASU’s offense with the other dynamic guards in the rotation. The one game in which the redshirt senior didn’t record double-digit shot attempts was against Kansas State.

Miller was a massive reason the Sun Devils cruised to an early 15-0 lead, starting the game 4-4 from the field. However, he only got two shot attempts after halftime and was cut off from the offensive attack.

Senior guard Alston Mason got a majority of the attempts as he was having a stellar second half against the Wildcats, dropping 14 points, but the lack of shot attempts and designed actions for Miller severed ASU’s offensive output early in the second half.

Giving an efficient scorer like Miller more opportunities with the ball in his hands will help the Sun Devils get out of this runt and get back in the win column against Oklahoma State.
