Big Ten Daily (Nov. 8): Julian Reese Scores 18, Leads Maryland to Season-Opening Win

Julian Reese has been through the college basketball wars at Maryland, and he knows what it takes to get things done. He was at his best on Tuesday night, scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the Terrapins' 68-53 victory over Mount St. Mary's. 

Reese, a junior forward from Baltimore who started all but one game a year ago, made 8 of 11 shots and also blocked two shots. Freshman guard DeShawn Harris-Smith finished with 12 in his highly anticipated Maryland debut. Veteran guard Jahmir Young also scored 12 points.

“I think Julian is probably one of the best college basketball players out there right now,” second-year Maryland coach Kevin Willard said of Reese, who averaged 11.4 points and 7.2 rebounds a year ago. “We’re working a lot through him.”

Tuesday's other Big Ten results

• IOWA 110, NORTH DAKOTA 68: Iowa had six players in double figures and had just seven turnovers in a rout of North Dakota. Payton Sandfort led the Hawkeyes with 21 points, and also had nine rebounds. Iowa made 12-of-24 three-pointers and hit 18-of-20 free throws.
• MICHIGAN 99, UNC ASHEVILLE 74: Oliver Nkamhoua, a transfer from Tennessee, scored 25 points in his Michigan debut and point Dug McDougal added 22 points and eight assists in a rout of UNC Asheville. Michigan interim head coach Phil Martelli ran the show as head coach Juwan Howard continues to recover from his Sept. 15 heart procedure.
• INDIANA 69, FLORIDA GULF COAST 63. Trey Galloway had 16 points and Oregon transfer Kel'el Ware had a double-double as Indiana used a second-half rally to avoid an upset. To read the complete game story, CLICK HERE

Week 2 College Football Playoff poll

The second rendition of the College Football Playoff poll came out on Tuesday night, and it looked a lot like the first one. Ohio State is still No. 1, and Michigan is ranked No. 3. Both teams are 9-0 and on a collision course as potential unbeatens in their end-of-season showdown in Columbus on Nov. 25.

The top eight teams remained unchanged, with No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Florida State holding on to the other two playoff spots. The top eight teams remained unchanged.

Penn State (8-1) moved up a spot to No. 10, and Iowa (7-2) entered the poll at No. 22.
