Clemson men's basketball head coach Brad Brownell confirmed that he's nearing an extension.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Wednesday that Clemson is finalizing a six-year deal to retain Brownell through 2031. The new contract is expected to become official soon.

Brownell first leads the Tigers into the NCAA tournament as a No. 5 seed. Ahead of Clemson's opening-round matchup against McNeese State, the coach told reporters that he's "very close to ironing out" a new deal.

"I've had a bunch of meetings with [athletic director] Graham [Neff]," Brownell said Wednesday (h/t On3). "As the regular season was kind of coming to an end that last week, he got with me, and we started to have some conversations, preliminary conversations. Certainly, they've heated up over the last week or so, and it's been really good."

Brownell said he's "extremely excited" and "happy" about staying in Clemson.

"Clemson has been a very special place for me and my family for 15 years and just have thoroughly enjoyed building the program," Brownell said. "Love what Clemson stands for as a university and proud to be a part of it."

Like football coach Dabo Swinney, he's "all in" on Clemson.

"Excited about where my program is," he added. "I think we've done an unbelievable job from facility improvements all the way to success initiatives on the floor, off the floor. Excited to try to continue this level of success."

Brownell guides Clemson into the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and fifth time since he took the job in 2010. The Tigers set program records with 27 wins and 18 ACC victories during the 2024-25 season.

As Clemson's longest-tenured head coach, Brownell leads the university in games coached (487) and won (292). However, the Tigers fell short of capturing the coach's first ACC title when losing 76-73 to Louisville in the semifinals.

Although Clemson has never made the Final Four, Brownell took his squad to the Elite Eight last year. He hopes to oversee another deep run, starting with Thursday's game against McNeese State at 3:15 p.m. ET.
