Brad Brownell Faces Massive Challenge as Clemson Reloads for 2025-2026 Season With Key Portal Moves
USA TODAY Sports

As the Clemson Tigers men’s basketball team prepares for the 2025-2026 season, the roster is undergoing a significant transformation. With the departure of key veterans like Chase Hunter, Ian Schieffelin, and Viktor Lakhin, the Tigers are entering a new era—one that will require both returning players and incoming talent to step up in major ways.

Glaring Portal Needs

  1. Center: Christian Reeves has potential, but there’s no clear backup if he’s the starter. Finding another big man is the top priority.
  2. Shooting: Clemson has depth at most positions, but adding another shooter could help maximize the offense.
  3. Experience: The Tigers are relying on multiple players who have never played a college game—six of the eleven scholarship players lack experience. If there’s a third or fourth scholarship available in the portal, it must be used on battle-tested players.

Departing Veterans

  • Chase Hunter: A dynamic guard and leader, his absence leaves a major hole in the backcourt.
  • Ian Schieffelin: A 6’8” forward who played a crucial role on both ends of the floor.
  • Viktor Lakhin: A 6’11”, 245-pound center whose presence in the paint was a game-changer.

Returning Players for 2025-2026

  • G Dillon Hunter (Senior, 6’3”) – Veteran presence in the backcourt.
  • G Jake Heidbreder (Senior, 6’5”, 180 lbs) – A proven shooter who will be relied on for perimeter scoring.
  • G Del Jones (Sophomore, 6’2”) – Expected to take a step forward after an encouraging freshman season.
  • G Ace Buckner (Sophomore, 6’3”, 170 lbs) – A defensive specialist with untapped offensive potential.
  • F Chauncey Wiggins (Senior, 6’10”) – His versatility will be key as Clemson rebuilds its frontcourt.
  • F Dallas Thomas (Sophomore, 6’8”) – Will bring energy and rebounding to the rotation.
  • C Christian Reeves (Junior, 7’1”) – The lone center on the roster as of now.

Incoming Recruits

  • G Zac Foster (6’3”, 180 lbs) – An exciting scoring guard who should make an impact early.
  • F Chase Thompson (6’8”, 220 lbs) – A physical forward with shades of Hunter Tyson’s skill set.
  • C Trent Steinour (6’9”, 195 lbs) – A rim protector who will provide much-needed size.

Where Does Clemson Go From Here?

With no high-profile, multi-year superstar to lean on, Clemson must take a by-committee approach to winning. Rising seniors like Hunter, Heidbreder, and Wiggins will need to lead, while younger players such as Jones, Buckner, and Reeves must prove they’re ready for bigger roles.

The success of this group hinges on player development and chemistry. Without a clear go-to scorer, will someone emerge as the next face of Clemson basketball? Or will this transitional season expose the team’s inexperience?

One thing is clear: The Tigers aren’t done building this roster. The transfer portal will play a key role in filling their biggest needs before the season tips off.

Jaeden Zackery’s Eligibility Update

Regarding Jaeden Zackery and the possibility of an extra year of eligibility, recent NCAA legislation has granted additional years in specific cases. Zackery, who had a career-high 24 points in his recent performance, says the staff is "looking into" the possibility of him receiving an extra year of eligibility as a JUCO player. If granted, Zackery expressed his interest: “I would definitely love to come back here for another year,” he says.
