He may have only averaged a little over a minute per game this past season, but Townsend Tripple’s impact at BYU stretched far beyond the box score.
After three seasons with the Cougars, the 6-foot-8 walk-on forward from Meridian, Idaho, has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, per Verbal Commits. A redshirt in 2020 and a returned missionary, Tripple now looks to use his final two years of eligibility elsewhere—likely seeking a program that can offer the one thing BYU never quite could: consistent playing time.

Despite limited minutes—just 19 games across his career—Tripple became a beloved figure in Cougar Nation. From his iconic mustache to viral memes, he connected with fans in a way that stats can’t measure. His brief, high-energy appearances—like his three-pointer against Texas Tech in a tough Big 12 road game—only added to his legend.
Tripple’s departure is less about loyalty and more about opportunity. The Cougars’ frontcourt was packed with size and experience, leaving little room for the walk-on to carve out a meaningful role under head coach Kevin Young. Even during BYU’s inaugural Big 12 run, injuries to key forwards only temporarily opened doors. Once the starters returned, Tripple’s minutes disappeared.
At 6-foot-8 with solid fundamentals and a high basketball IQ, Tripple could be a valuable rotational piece at a mid-major program or in a system that prioritizes stretch forwards. Wherever he lands, expect him to bring leadership, grit, and a team-first mindset built in Provo.
Tripple becomes the fourth Cougar to hit the portal this offseason, joining Kanon Catchings, Elijah Crawford, and Dallin Hall.
For Cougar fans, Tripple’s departure is a reminder that even the most beloved underdogs sometimes have to bet on themselves. His next stop may not come with the BYU spotlight—but it just might come with the playing time he’s earned.
