While Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is arguably the biggest star in the WNBA, she remains closely connect with alma mater. Before becoming the league's No. 1 overall pick, she led the University of Iowa to back-to-back championship appearances.

During her four year tenure with the Hawkeyes, Clark became the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer (3,951 points). Last month, the WNBA's Rookie of the Year returned to the Carver-Hawkeye Arena as the school retired her No. 22 jersey into the rafters.

Iowa is also where she met her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, whom she started dating in 2023. Connor spent six years on the Hawkeyes men's basketball team coached by his father, Fran McCaffery.

However, the men's basketball program struggled this season, finishing with a 17-16 record and missing the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. One day after the Hawkeyes' 106-94 second-round loss in the Big Ten Tournament, Iowa fired McCaffery.

Immediately after the news broke, Connor posted on X, "," before deleting the message. As for Clark, she reacted to sad news by focusing on the good times from the McCaffery era. She reposted a message from Luka Garza, who earned the national college player of the year award under Coach McCaffery.

"Thank you Coach for changing my life, and the lives of so many others," Garza wrote. "You believed in a way that not many others did. Choosing to play in the black and gold was the best decision I have ever made for a lot of reasons, but mainly because I was able to be coached by you."

Clark remained by Connor's side during this tumultuous time, as they attended the Big Ten Conference men's basketball tournament together on Friday night.

A clip of the Fever star and McCaffery at the game went viral, as they both appeared to be glued to their phones. One fan defended them in the comments and wrote, "You realize his dad was let go from Iowa after 15 years as head coach. You think maybe their phones were blowing up from people concerning that??"

McCaffery, 65, exits Iowa as the program's longest-tenured coach and all-time wins leader with a 297-207 record overall. Initially under contract through 2028, he will receive a $4.2 million buyout that can be spread out over three years, per The Athletic.
