Cameron Boozer is expected to be one of the top picks in the NBA Draft in June, and his father is not shying away from the high expectations that will come with it.
Former NBA star Carlos Boozer hyped up his son in a new interview, going as far as to christen him the modern-day answer to Tim Duncan and warning that any general manager who passes on him would regret it for the next 15 years.
“You look at what Tim Duncan did. I’m not comparing Cameron to Tim Duncan, but he was another guy that wasn’t [athletically] a Kevin Garnett or a Tracy McGrady or a Kobe Bryant or Shaquille O’Neal,” Carlos Boozer told Marc J. Spears of Andscape. “But you know what he did? He won five championships in that era [against] those players — the Kobes and the Shaqs, because of his IQ, because of his skill set, and because his team would follow him.
“That is who Cameron is. He’s a modern-day version of that. People are going to follow him because of what he gives to the team and what he gives to the game. That translates into winning. So. if you want to win, you pick Cameron. And I’m going to tell you this: The GMs that don’t pick Cam, they’re going to regret that 15 years from now.”
One of the few knocks on Cameron is that he is not a top-tier athlete, so his father obviously wants to downplay that narrative. Duncan wasn’t either, and Boozer wants to make sure everyone knows that.
Boozer is winning plaudits from a lot of big names. He should be among the top four picks in June’s draft, though he might not necessarily be the favorite to go No. 1.
