A New Mexico men's basketball player allegedly punched a walk-on teammate.

According to KOB 4, an NBC affiliate in Albuquerque, the family of a walk-on player accused another unidentified Lobos player of hitting him during a team flight to Palm Springs for last week's Acrisure Classic. The walk-on, who was wearing a sling, was allegedly struck on his injured shoulder.

The incident allegedly unfolded over a dispute about where the walk-on player sat on the plane. Furthermore, the same player was accused of hitting his teammate again at the hotel that day.

Per KOB, the alleged victim's family claimed he required medical treatment at an Albuquerque hospital when returning home from California. They also said the coaching staff did nothing when informed about the alleged attacks.

A school spokesperson released a statement addressing the situation.

"The University of New Mexico takes the safety and well-being of all our students very seriously. We are aware of an alleged incident involving members of our men’s basketball team and are carefully reviewing and assessing all of the facts," the school said. "We are following all appropriate protocols and procedures in addressing this situation and are committed to addressing any misconduct appropriately. Due to federal student privacy laws, specifically the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), we cannot disclose specific details or comment further on individual student matters."

New Mexico has started head coach Richard Pitino's fourth season with a 6-2 record. The Lobos lost to Arizona State before defeating USC in the Acrisure Classic's third-place game behind 20 points from Tru Washington and 11 assists from Donovan Dent.

The alleged incident creates an immediate crisis for the university's new athletic director. Fernando Lovo began his tenure as New Mexico's AD and vice president on Sunday.

"My commitment is to foster an environment where our programs can thrive, and our student-athletes can excel in all aspects of their lives," Lovo said in the school's Nov. 24 announcement. "I look forward to engaging with the Lobo community, building strong relationships, and ensuring our athletics align with the university's mission and values."
