The Kansas State Wildcats men's basketball team endured a tough 2024-25 campaign that saw them finish just under .500.
The team finished 16-17 overall and a 9-11 mark in Big 12 play, good for a tie for ninth place in one of college basketball’s deepest power conferences.
On Monday, the Wildcats officially addressed a massive void by landing PJ Haggerty, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard who spent the 2024-25 season at Memphis.
Haggerty, widely regarded as the top guard in the 247Sports Transfer Portal Rankings (No. 2 overall), announced via On3 insider Joe Tipton that he will bring his prolific scoring and playmaking to Manhattan, Kansas.
Under third-year head coach Jerome Tang, the Wildcats showed flashes, most notably an opening-round upset of the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Big 12 Tournament, before falling to Baylor, 70-56, in the second round, ceding any postseason hopes.
Offensively, Kansas State leaned heavily on guard David N’Guessan, who led the team with 13.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Coleman Hawkins added veteran presence inside, averaging 10.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocks, but his contributions weren’t enough to push the Wildcats past the gauntlet of the Big 12 conference.
Haggerty’s decision caps a whirlwind few years: Ater redshirting six games for the TCU Horned Frogs in 2022-23, he exploded onto the scene with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in 2023-24, averaging 21.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game on 49.3 percent shooting and earning AAC Freshman of the Year honors.
At Memphis this past season, he elevated his game further, posting 21.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per outing, being named AAC Player of the Year, and securing consensus second-team All-American status.
This will be Haggerty’s fourth program in four years.
