Duolingo roasts Johni Broome over NBA draft combine performance

Auburn star Johni Broome saw his college career end in successful fashion, helping the Tigers make the Final Four. Attempting to make the NBA is the next stage for him. The journey began on Tuesday at the NBA Draft Combine, participating in drills in front of scouts and execs.

One, in particular, did not go well for Broome. His standing vertical leap received a ton of attention on social media after whiffing. Plenty made jokes were made on the matter and none better than Duolingo, an app designed to help people learn foreign languages.

“Learn Chinese and try Super Duolingo today,” Duolingo’s X account said. Not only were they able to promote their product but they got a brutal jab toward Broome in there.

A moment where Broome is taking a bit of heat, the on-court play of the now-former Auburn star can make up for the clip. His numbers this past year on the Plains were simply incredible, falling just short of winning multiple prestigious National Player of the Year awards.

In 36 games played, Broome averaged 18.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Teams had a tough time at the rim when Broome was on the court as well, with the center blocking 2.1 shots every time out there. At the snap of a finger, Broome could take over a game for the Tigers.

He did so on multiple different occasions. Whether it was early at the Maui Invitational, during SEC play, or during the NCAA Tournament. Broome was fantastic throughout and is now hoping to get an opportunity in the NBA.

“I want to give my love to Bruce Pearl and my Auburn Tigers,” program legend Charles Barkley said at the Final Four. “I want to say Johni Broome is the greatest basketball player in Auburn history. I can’t wait to go down there when we retire his jersey. He’s been great for this school, he’s the greatest player in Auburn basketball history with me and John Mengelt and Chuck Person and Mike Mitchell. But he’s taken the throne, man. And I can’t wait to go down there and retire his jersey.”

Right after the NBA Draft lottery, ESPN dropped an updated mock draft. Broome did feature but in the second round. The Worldwide Leader has him going No. 37 overall to the Detroit Pistons. Even with the funny moment, there is plenty of time for Broome to impress and see his draft stock rise.
