WVU interim HC Josh Eilert was asked about the status of forward Akok Akok during his weekly press conference on Thursday. Eilert didn’t have an update but mentioned that things are heading in a positive direction for the fifth-year senior.

“Nothing new on Akok. Things are certainly trending in a positive direction if I can speak from a general side of things,” Eilert said. “Everything seems to be trending positively, which is great for him and his health, which is something we can all put a smile on our face for.”

During the second half of the George Mason exhibition game, Akok collapsed on the floor, resulting in him being stretchered out and taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital for the night. Akok was released after a night and has been tested throughout the last two weeks.

Eilert added that Akok is not participating in anything at the moment as medical officials continue to keep an eye on him.

“No. That’s all in the medical hands. We’re being as precautious as possible with him to make sure he’s in a good place,” Eilert said.

Eilert didn’t formally rule Akok out for the Monmouth game but it looks doubtful that he will make his Mountaineer debut on Friday.

Akok averaged 6.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks over 31 games for Georgetown last season. He shot 46% from the field and 28% from three on 2.7 attempts per game and recorded three double-doubles last season against Coppin State, Villanova and Xavier. The Manchester, Nh. native had three games of five blocks or more. Akok began his collegiate career at UConn.
