CBS Sports and TNT Sports analyst Jay Wright is more uniquely qualified than most to offer insight and make predictions about March Madness.
After all, Wright spent 21 seasons as the Villanova men’s basketball coach, winning two national titles and making 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, which included four trips to the Final Four, five trips to the Elite Eight, and eight Sweet 16 appearances.
So while Wright picking all four No. 1 seeds — Auburn, Duke, Florida, and Houston — to make it to the Final Four, or his national championship game prediction of Auburn topping Duke likely wasn’t a surprise to many, the fact that Wright predicted three first-round upsets when he released his bracket presumably did.
The biggest upset of Wright’s trio of predictions is No. 12 Colorado State over No. 5 Memphis in the West Region. He also predicted No. 11 Xavier will take out No. 6 Illinois in the Midwest Region and No. 11 North Carolina knocking off No. 6 Ole Miss in the South Region.

Wright took things a step further and predicted North Carolina would also beat No. 3 Iowa State in Round 2 before being eliminated by No. 2 Michigan State in the Sweet 16.
Unfortunately for Colorado State and Xavier, Wright has them both getting bounced in Round 2 by No. 4 Maryland and No. 3 Kentucky, respectively.
Though only the First Four games have been played, North Carolina is already arguably the biggest story of the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels qualified for the tournament despite having what many believe to be a subpar resume compared to other teams left out including West Virginia and Indiana.
UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham also serves as the chair of the selection committee, and he’s faced immense backlash since Selection Sunday with fans believing he orchestrated North Carolina getting into the tournament.
