Five-star Darryn Peterson has been on the national radar for years now.

Heading into his senior season of high-school basketball, Peterson is one of the best prospects in the nation. The 6-foot-5 combo guard is ranked as a five star and the No. 3 overall player in the 2025 class out of Huntington Prep, the loaded basketball program in West Virginia. Playing on the Adidas circuit this summer, Peterson impressed many and continued to earn elite reviews from scouts, coaches, and media members.

Now, Peterson has narrowed his recruiting list.

On Wednesday, he narrowed his list to the following schools: Washington, Kansas, Ohio State, Louisville, Kentucky, Kansas State, Arizona State, and USC. He did not include Pitt on the list.

Peterson was the first player that the Panthers offered in the 2025 class.

He received an offer from Pitt in April 2021, while he was still in the eighth grade. At the time, the 14-year old played for local coach Tom Droney and Wildcat Select. Pitt was the third school to extend an offer to him. At the time, Peterson only held offers from St. John’s and Xavier. Now, he has a list of eight schools, including several blue-blood programs, that are after him hard.

It’s not time to panic for Pitt fans, though. Although he was the first prospect the staff offered in the class, Peterson has not spoken about Pitt and vice versa in a long time. The Panthers’ staff has clearly been focusing elsewhere in 2025 for years now, moreso on guards like Derek Dixon, Meleek Thomas, and Amari Evans. The Panthers also have their sights set on Omari Witherspoon, CJ Ingram, Isaiah Denis, and Davion Hannah at the moment.
