Former Gonzaga Center Enters Transfer Portal, Expected to Pursue Lawsuit Against NCAA to Reclaim Eligibility

Former Gonzaga center Efton Reid entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday despite not having any remaining eligibility, having played one season at LSU, one at Gonzaga, and the last two years as a starter at Wake Forest.

Reid is reportedly expected to pursue legal action against the NCAA to reclaim a season of eligibility for 2023-24, stemming from a second-time transfer rule that kept him out for the first seven games of the season.

However, without any precedent on a lawsuit like this, and having played 25 or more games in four straight seasons - without a COVID year - it seems likely Reid's college career has in fact come to an end.

Reid started all 34 games for LSU as a freshman in 2021-22, averaging 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He then transferred to Gonzaga and played right away in 2022-23, appearing in 25 games off the bench and averaging 2.1 points in 4.6 minutes per game.

After that Reid hit the portal again and landed at Wake Forest, but at the time the NCAA rules mandated any player transferring a second time would have to sit out a year.

The NCAA abruptly changed that rule in the middle of the basketball season due to the threat of lawsuits, and Reid ended up playing 28 games and starting 25 for the Demon Deacons, averaging a career-best 9.6 points and 7.9 rebounds.

He then started 31 games for Wake Forest this past season, averaging 8.8 points and 6.6 boards.

All told, Reid has appeared in 118 of 138 possible games over the past four years, with most of the absences being coaching decisions during his lone season at Gonzaga.

The big man could set a precedent if he does in fact sue and win an additional year of eligibility, although it would be a surprise decision considering how little the ruling impacted his ability to suit up during his career.
