Former Illinois Basketball Guard Announces Transfer Destination

Former Illinois Basketball guard, Niccolo Moretti, announced that he will be transferring to Florida Atlantic University. On April 30th, Moretti announced his intent to enter the transfer portal after a season and a half with Illinois Basketball. The Italian point guard did not play much during his time in Champaign, however, he did show flashes as a true floor general. His best game came in Champaign against the Iowa Hawkeyes. In that game, Moretti scored 9 points in 17 minutes, including two momentum-shifting three-pointers.

He showed flashes as a secondary ball-handler off the bench, however, was hampered by a foot injury that kept him out of play for two months. It will be interesting to see how he develops at a school that just made the Final Four in 2023.

What’s next for Illinois Basketball?

Illinois Basketball seems to be going after one more splash addition. As a result, they have targeted some overseas prospects and are also currently waiting on prospects to withdraw from the NBA draft. Previously, Brad Underwood stated that he would like to add one more piece and it seems that piece is a primary wing scorer. Earlier in the offseason, they threw their hat in the ring for AJ Storr and Kadary Richmond. On top of that, they did try to bid for talented Egor Demin. If they are unsuccessful, look for Ty Rodgers and Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn to have an increased role for the 2024 season.

Above all, Rodgers and Gibbs-Lawhorn are the only returnees to the Fighting Illini. After playing on a team that went to the Elite Eight, they both should be ready for a larger role.
