CJ Fredrick, a well-traveled and respected veteran of college basketball, has officially announced his retirement from the game. The former Kentucky guard shared the news on Instagram, capping off a collegiate career that spanned three schools, countless memories, and a legacy of perseverance through injury and adversity.
“Man, what a ride,” Fredrick wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “This game has given more to me than I could ever imagine. I’ve truly been blessed to be able to play this game and go to places I have dreamed of as a kid. Even at its lowest points, it was all worth it. I will forever love the game of basketball and the relationships it’s allowed me to have for life. To all my teammates, coaches, trainers, family and anyone I have met along the way, thank you for letting me be a small part of your life. I hope to give back to the game that gave me everything. Thank you ❤️”
Fredrick began his college career at Iowa, where he quickly made a name for himself as a sharpshooting guard. After two seasons with the Hawkeyes, he transferred to Kentucky in 2021. Injuries limited his availability, but when healthy, Fredrick made his presence felt. During the 2022-23 season with the Wildcats, he played in 27 games, averaging 6.1 points, 1.5 assists, and 0.8 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per contest. He was known for his high basketball IQ, quick release, and leadership on and off the court.
Following his time in Lexington, Fredrick transferred once more to the University of Cincinnati, where he spent his final two seasons. Though injuries again played a role in his time there, his influence in the locker room and presence as a veteran leader were valued components of the Bearcats’ program. He will be graduating from Cincinnati in May where it will be marking the end of an impactful and inspiring journey through college hoops.
Fredrick’s career may not have followed a straight line, but his resilience, passion, and love for the game left a lasting impression at every stop. As he steps away from playing, Fredrick says he hopes to remain involved in basketball and give back to the sport that gave him so much.
Though his playing days have come to an end, CJ Fredrick’s legacy as a hard-nosed competitor and respected teammate will be remembered by fans, coaches, and teammates across the country.
