Former Kentucky star reaches 1,500 career points in college basketball

With his second bucket of Washington's road game against the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday afternoon, former Kentucky point guard Sahvir Wheeler crossed the 1,500 career point mark in his fifth and final season of college basketball eligibility.

Wheeler is having a career best season for the Huskies, averaging 15 points, 5.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.2 steals while playing a little over 34 minutes per night. 

He is one of four Wildcats who transferred after last season, joining Lance Ware (Villanova), CJ Fredrick (Cincinnati) and Daimion Collins (LSU) in finding a new home - while also reuniting with another former Kentucky player, Keion Brooks, who spent three seasons in Lexington and is averaging 21.2 points for UW this year.

The way Brooks is playing he has a shot to win Player of the Year in the Pac-12 this season.

Wheeler began his college career at Georgia, transferring to Kentucky after two years with the Bulldogs including a sophomore year where he averaged 14 points and 7.4 assists.

The lefty had a great first year under coach Calipari, averaging 10.1 points and 6.9 assists, but his second season was marred by injuries and inconsistency, and he hit the portal after appearing in just 21 games in 2022-23 and averaging a career low 7.7 points along with 5.6 assists.

Considering the excellence of freshmen guards DJ Wagner, Rob Dillingham, and Reed Sheppard it's for the best Wheeler found somewhere that had minutes for him, else he may have never hit the 1,500-point mark.
