Former UConn HC Jim Calhoun retires, steps down as Saint Joseph coach

Basketball Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun again announced his retirement from coaching Thursday, stepping down from his position as the head coach at University of Saint Joseph.

Calhoun, 79, spent 26 seasons as the Connecticut Huskies head coach, amassing a 625-243 record with three national titles and four trips to the Final Four. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, seven years ahead of his retirement as head coach at UConn.

He came out of retirement in 2017 to help Saint Joseph launch a Division III men's basketball program. After a 16-12 record in the school's first basketball season, Saint Joseph went 26-3 in year two and won the Great Northeast Athletic Conference title. The team opened the 2021-22 season with a 3-0 record.

"It's just the right time," Calhoun said in a statement. "I'm healthy, my wife (Pat) is healthy, and the USJ men's basketball program is healthy. We built this program starting from scratch about five years ago, and now the team is in a good place"

The university announced associate head coach Glen Miller, a former head coach at Ivy League's Brown and Penn, will take over Calhoun's position at Saint Joseph.

"Coach Calhoun has stayed longer and done more for USJ than I could ever have hoped when we first talked to him about launching our men's basketball team," university president Dr. Rhona Free said in a statement.
