What a secondary day it was up in Arlington for the Big 12 Conference Baseball Tournament. We saw a total of four Big 12 games on Wednesday, and it was non-stop jam-packed action from morning until the late-night hours.
As we continue to make our way through the tourney, I have a few thoughts from the first full day of Big 12 baseball action. Here are the final scores from yesterday’s games.
#4 Arizona State: 4, #12 BYU: 1
#1 West Virginia: 10, #8 Cincinnati: 3
#2 Kansas: 7, #7 Oklahoma State: 6
#3 TCU: 7, #11 Houston: 1
On Wednesday against Arizona State, BYU completely shut down the Sun Devils offense. But that wasn’t the case on Thursday against Arizona. The Wildcats hit two home runs right off the bat in the first inning. Somehow, both of them ended up hitting the foul pole which I have never seen before in my life.
Arizona added another run in the fifth inning before BYU finally scored their first run in the eighth inning. Between the excellent pitching from Owen Kramkowski and the early runs, Arizona was able to move on to Friday.
After struggling the last couple weeks of the regular season, the Mountaineers got back on track against Cincinnati on Thursday. Despite being down 1-0 early, West Virginia put up a five spot in the fourth inning. The Bearcats did score a pair in the fifth thanks to a home run by Jack Nitli home run.
But, the Mountaineers continued to pile on runs over the next two innings. This was a big win for West Virginia who is still looking to get a regional hosting bid. One more win on Friday couple help secure a regional being played in Morgantown.
Despite getting on the board first, Kansas found themselves down early in the game after Oklahoma State put up a three spot in the third inning. However, Jackson Hauge hit a solo blast in the third to pull the Jayhawks within one.
But the Cowboys responded by putting two more on the board in the fourth thanks to a key hit from Alex Conover. Kansas once again found some life when Brady Ballinger blasted a three-run bomb to tie the game at six in the seventh inning.
Then Mike Koszewski ended up being the hero for the Jayhawks with his game winning RBI single in the ninth inning.
There’s a reason why I picked TCU to win the tournament this week. It’s because I thought they were playing the best baseball in the conference and that would be hard to argue with after seeing them on Thursday night.
After a pair of hits from Cole Cramer and Noah Franco, the Horned Frogs were up 5-0 after just the second inning and never looked back. Franco blasted a solo home run in the fourth before Nolan Traeger tacked on another in the seventh to make it 7-0.
Houston would finally score their first run of the game in the ninth thanks to Xavier Perez who has had quite a tournament but by then it was too little too late for Houston.
#1 West Virginia vs #4 Arizona
#2 Kansas vs #3 TCU
