Another piece of Georgia Tech’s future has just walked out the door.
Freshman forward Darrion Sutton, once a prized member of Damon Stoudamire’s inaugural recruiting class, officially entered the NCAA transfer portal Friday morning. The move marks the fifth Yellow Jacket to hit the portal since the season ended, adding pressure to a roster already in flux.

Sutton arrived in Atlanta with hype. Ranked the No. 82 player nationally by Rivals and a four-star recruit out of Overtime Elite (Atlanta), he had his pick of more than 30 Division I offers. At 6-foot-8 and 190 pounds, the St. Louis native brought athleticism, length, and versatility to The Flats—traits that made him one of the most anticipated young players in the ACC.
But the production never fully materialized. In 24 appearances this season, Sutton averaged just 1.3 points and 1.6 rebounds in 8.9 minutes per game. His lone start came late in the year, and his best performance—a six-point, four-rebound effort—came in the ACC Tournament loss to Duke.
Sutton joins guards Nait George, Duncan Powell, Ibrahim Souare, and Doryan Onwuchekwa in the transfer portal, as Tech’s offseason roster attrition continues to mount. Notably, the Jackets have yet to bring in a single portal addition, leaving fans wondering what the plan is for Year 2 under Stoudamire. It’s clear the rebuild is far from over.
Sutton, with three years of eligibility remaining, will have plenty of suitors given his size and pedigree. Meanwhile, Tech is in a race against time to reload, especially as top portal targets like St. Bonaventure’s Melvin Council Jr. weigh their options.
Losing a young, athletic four-star like Sutton isn’t just a blow to depth—it’s a signal that the Yellow Jackets’ rebuild may be more complex than expected. The pressure is on for Stoudamire to not only fill gaps, but to stabilize a program at risk of falling further behind in a rapidly shifting ACC landscape.
