If there's one team that has had a hot start in the new NCAA season, it is the Wisconsin Badgers. Ranked No. 15, they are 7-0 after a win against the unranked Pittsburgh Panthers, who suffered their first loss of the season after six straight victories, all thanks to John Tonje.
Tonje was an unknown 23-year-old who transferred to Wisconsin from the Missouri Tigers, where he averaged 2.6 points per game in eight games played last season. Before that, the guard spent four seasons at Colorado State, and in his last, and the best, season, he averaged 14.6 points per game.
Seven games into the season, Tonje is averaging 23.0 points per contest while shooting 54.3 percent from the field, 40.6 percent from three, and 95.2 percent from the charity line.
John's play thus far has earned him praise from many, including CBSS Sports' Basketball Insider Adam Finkelstein, who raved about his impact for the Badgers.
"I don't think there is a transfer in the country who has been, I'm going to put it this way because let's just be real, dollar for dollar more impactful than John Tonje," he said after the game against Pittsburgh. "I mean, what he's done in terms of the scoring, the second half he had today, what he did against Arizona, he scores at multiple levels. He gets to the free throw line like maybe nobody else in college basketball."

Wisconsin's senior has been looking like a Big Ten Player of the Year candidate so far, leading Wisconsin to its best start to the season since 2014.
"We were worried about Wisconsin when they lost Storr and Hepburn to the portal," Finkelstein continued. "They come up with John Tonje, everybody's like, 'Ah, who's this?' He was going to go to New Mexico, ends up here, and now he's better than A.J. Storr. Like I said, dollar for dollar, the best transfer in the country right now, in my humble opinion."
The 6'5" guard has already had a few big games this season. Before his 33-point performance against Pittsburgh, he had a 41-point outburst nine days before against No. 9 ranked Arizona, shooting 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 21-of-22 shooting from the free throw line.
"I sort of threw it out there on a podcast last week or the week before," Gary Parrish said. "Has anybody ever averaged 2.6 points per game one season and then scored 41 in a game the next? I'm not sure, but Tonje did it this season."

The 23-year-old has been very consistent, and Wisconsin is playing above expectations. After the 7-0 start, they are emerging as the dark horse favorites to win the Big Ten, all thanks to one of the biggest sensations in college basketball thus far.
