Thirty-five years ago, Coppin State stunned Maryland in a 70–53 upset that still echoes in Baltimore’s basketball memory. This November, that legacy returns to center stage as the Eagles once again lock horns with the Terrapins—this time on the city’s biggest hardwood stage.

On November 3, the 2025–26 college basketball season tips off with fireworks as Coppin State faces Maryland in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series at CFG Bank Arena. It’s more than a game—it’s a celebration of Maryland’s basketball tradition and a bold spotlight on one of the nation’s proudest HBCU programs.

Coppin State, led by head coach and former NBA forward Larry Stewart, enters with unfinished business. Stewart, who starred in that iconic 1989 victory, knows firsthand the pride on the line. “I am excited for our guys and our fans,” said Stewart. “We get to play against a top-tier program like Maryland. I’m expecting CFG Arena to be sold out with both of our schools’ fan bases in the building.”

Maryland, now under the leadership of new head coach Buzz Williams, brings back a deep, athletic squad that finished the 2024–25 season with a 21–12 record and a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Returning guard Jahari Long, who averaged 11.2 points per game last season, will be a key piece in the Terps’ fast-paced offense.

Coppin State is still building under Stewart, but the Eagles have shown flashes of brilliance. Freshman standout Malik Jefferson, a 6’6” wing from D.C., averaged 14.7 points in conference play and could be the X-factor against Maryland’s length.

The Hall of Fame Series is giving HBCUs like Coppin State a rare national platform to showcase talent against major-conference programs. With the game in their own backyard, the Eagles have more than home-court pride—they have history on their side.

For Baltimore hoops fans, this is more than just a game. It’s a revival. It’s city pride. It’s HBCU excellence on full display.
