In a surprising development on the recruiting trail, class of 2025 four-star point guard Acaden Lewis has officially decommitted from the University of Kentucky, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. The 6-foot-2 standout from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., had previously committed to Kentucky and reaffirmed that decision even after the coaching change from John Calipari to Mark Pope earlier this spring. Now, just weeks later, Lewis has chosen to reopen his recruitment.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision, but I have to do what’s best for my future,” Lewis told ESPN. “Thank you to Coach Pope and the whole Kentucky staff for all they’ve done for me so far.”

A Talented Guard Back on the Market

Widely regarded as one of the most polished and creative guards in the 2025 class, Lewis has earned praise for his pace control, playmaking in transition, and defensive versatility. His decommitment creates a notable void in Kentucky’s backcourt plans and sends ripples across the national recruiting landscape, as he immediately becomes one of the most coveted uncommitted players in his class.

Lewis was expected to be the backup point guard behind Pitt transfer Jaland Lowe. That projected role may have influenced his decision to look elsewhere, with immediate playing time likely a priority as he evaluates other programs.

"I will always be grateful to Coach Pope and the entire Kentucky staff for believing in me," Lewis said in his statement to ESPN. "It is clear Kentucky is a special place with an amazing fanbase, but as I reflect on what is best for my future, I have decided to re-open my recruitment."

Kentucky’s Shifting Backcourt Outlook

With Lewis stepping away, Kentucky's 2025 class now includes five-star shooting guard Jasper Johnson and five-star big man Malachi Moreno. While still strong on paper, Lewis’ absence leaves a gap, particularly at the point guard position.

The Wildcats are expected to turn their attention toward other backcourt prospects in the 2025 class or continue exploring the transfer portal, where they’ve already been active. Recent additions include Arizona State center Jayden Quaintance, Alabama’s Mouhamed Dioubate, Tulane’s Kam Williams, and Pitt’s Jaland Lowe.

Eyes on the Future

Kentucky remains in pursuit of top-tier talent, including elite forward Nate Ament—a projected top-five pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Ament’s decision could help reshape the Wildcats’ recruiting narrative in the wake of Lewis’ departure.

Meanwhile, Acaden Lewis—fresh off winning Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the District of Columbia—will draw heavy interest from programs offering a quicker path to starting minutes and an opportunity to lead from day one.
