The Wisconsin basketball team will have plenty of new faces this upcoming season alongside a few key familiar ones, but one transfer could standout.
Nick Boyd , a former FAU and San Diego State standout guard, transferred to Wisconsin during a whirlwind of a portal period. Boyd is the headliner for a strong class that the Badgers staff was able to put together, and the guard was also the exact man that the staff wanted all along. Coach Greg Gard managed to land Boyd after the recruit put together his best collegiate season to date in San Diego, shooting 41.1% from the field and scoring 13.4 points per game.
Boyd has not hit the court for the Wisconsin basketball team yet, but the guard could very well be the fastest player to join the program to date. The guard has all the tools to be a game-changer for the Badgers moving forward, but what exactly would Boyd do?
On the court, Boyd could be exactly what the new Wisconsin basketball offense needs as the combination of rare speed and accurate long-range shooting will be key.
With or without the basketball in hand, Boyd is dangerously fast and often disrupts play with the pace that is kept. Most defenders are unable to stay with Boyd when sprinting down the court and the guard creates opportunities for both himself and his teammates with his speed.
Within the Wisconsin offense, Boyd will draw plenty of attention given his ability to put up a shot or dish the ball in a moments notice, which should open up opportunities outside for long-range scorers. A season ago, Boyd recorded a 27% assist rate with 3.9 assists per game and a season high of eight which he recorded twice.
Boyd himself is an accomplished shooter from deep, but where the guard could find the most value within the offense is at the rim. The guard shot 54% at the rim last season while taking 43% of his total shots on the season at the basket. Boyd is a crafty finisher who is capable of nailing difficult shots from angles that put the defense off-balance.
Taking difficult shots is the name of the game for Boyd at times, with the guard being known for hitting deep three-point shots that many players would not attempt. Boyd had seven made three-point shots last season that were beyond 25-feet away from the basket.
