With the NBA Draft order now officially set, draft season is upon us.
There’s just over two weeks to go until the May 28 deadline, where players who are testing the NBA Draft Waters must decide to withdraw or return to school.
For Cedric Coward, that choice might be becoming clearer as the days go by.
The 6’6 wing from Duke has been skyrocketing up NBA Draft big boards. Howard played just six games last season at Washington State before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury, but his skills and athleticism are being shown off during various NBA combine tests.
He averaged 17.7 points and seven rebounds on 55.7% from the field and 40% from the three-point line. Albeit a small sample size, however, the season before, which was with Eastern Washington University, he put up nearly 15 points a game with very similar shooting splits.
Coward’s physical profile is what really stands out. He brings a 7’2 wingspan with a 38.5 inch vertical, all while being able to shoot, pass and defend.
Although he announced his commitment to a fourth collegiate season, people around the NBA believe he might be a first-round talent, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he changes his mind.
From being an unranked high school prospect to deciding between becoming a Blue Devil or becoming a professional, the story of Coward is a special one. He began his college career at Division III Willamette University, and now he’s a potential lottery pick.
NBA scouts love his physical stature, shooting touch, and defensive potential at the next level.
If he does decide to play basketball at Duke, they will likely be a heavy favorite to win the national championship.
If not, a certain NBA team will get a very intriguing prospect next month.
