Iowa Transfer Guard Cuts List to Six Programs, Includes Oklahoma

With the way the offseason has gone for Porter Moser and Oklahoma, the Sooners are going to have to be incredibly busy until the May 1 transfer portal deadline. They’ve lost four transfers — all of which were impact players — and now have to replace those productions on top of the graduates.

One of the players the Sooners have shown interest in from the transfer portal is Iowa guard Tony Perkins, who released his top six programs today. The programs he’s going to choose from includes Oklahoma, Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, Ole Miss and Oregon, he announced on Wednesday.

Whichever school lands the 6-foot-4 guard is going to get a productive player. Perkins brings experience, having just one season of eligibility remaining. He earned a second-team All-Big Ten selection this past season after averaging 14 points, 4.6 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 30.9 minutes per game for Iowa.

The Indianapolis native was a part of the 2020 recruiting class where he’s since spent four seasons at Iowa, which has seen him average 9.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals in 22.2 minutes per game over the course of his four-year career.

Oklahoma needs guard depth

Javian McCollum, Milos Uzan and Otega Owen — three players who produced for the Sooners on the perimeter — are each in the transfer portal. That’s a big impact Moser is having to replace with transfer portal players.

Incoming freshman Dayton Forsythe won’t be able to provide that big of an impact to replace those players, and portal additions are needed in the backcourt. Perkins would alleviate the pressure for Forsythe to make a big impact right away while also being a leader in the locker room with plenty of experience.

Perkins alone won’t be enough for Moser in the portal, but it’ll be the first win of what could be a huge offseason for the Sooners. Getting the ball rolling with a solid Big Ten producer could be huge for Oklahoma’s first season in the SEC.
