When Jaron Pierre Jr. declared for the NBA Draft, few doubted he had the numbers to back it up. Now, in a move that’s sending a surge of excitement through the SMU basketball community, Pierre has officially withdrawn his name from the 2025 NBA Draft and will return to the Hilltop for one more season.

For Mustangs fans, this is more than just a win, it’s a statement.

After a rollercoaster college journey that took him from Southern Miss to Wichita State to Jacksonville State, Pierre exploded last season, averaging 21.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. His has the ability to take over games, like his career-high 36-point night against Middle Tennessee. Pierre earned Conference USA Player of the Year honors and catapulted him onto the radar of NBA scouts.

Still, the 6’5” guard sees unfinished business in Dallas.

Pierre’s return is a massive boost for SMU, which goes into their second year in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2025. He instantly becomes a marquee name in a stacked league, and his decision to stay could elevate the Mustangs from dark horse to legitimate threat in their debut ACC season.

In an era when top college players often jump to the pros or the portal, Pierre’s loyalty stands out. For head coach Rob Lanier, it’s also a validation of the program’s direction and a major weapon in the recruiting war.

Expect Pierre to be one of the most talked-about names in college basketball next season, not just in the ACC, but nationwide.

And for SMU fans? The countdown begins. The Mustangs just got their star back.
