"It's the end of the world as we know it." While R.E.M. was ahead of their time back in 1987, nobody could've predicted the earth-shattering changes that have occurred in college basketball.
As we go into another Final Four weekend, Jim Nantz is sounding the alarm on the future of the sport. The longtime CBS Sports announcer has a lot to cheer about, with Houston returning to the Big Dance. But all the gleeful feelings take a back seat to what's coming in the future.
“My concern on your question is the future of college basketball,” Nantz admitted to Dan Patrick on his show this week.
“Because the portal and NIL, it’s difficult. And I don’t want to paint it, doom and gloom, I don’t want to say it’s bound to be extinct. It’s not going to be. But what we knew it as, what we grew up with, that model doesn’t exist anymore, and some people have a real problem with that.“
Nantz represents a growing number of the population who don't want NIL being an out of control environment similar to the Wild West. Anyone who has common sense understands the need for regulations. He explains what coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff are doing at Houston and how more programs should adopt a similar model.
Who tops the list of NIL deals going into Final Four?
"As we go into this weekend, we represent college basketball the way we used to know it better than anybody, maybe in America, Nantz said. "Our guys stay. Yeah, we have to play the NIL game. But our guys aren’t racing to the portal. They believe in their coach. There’s a family culture there; they’re all in.”
Houston's Kelvin Sampson says college basketball's chaos will only get worse
The season has been wild, but fans still are showing up with the same enthusiasm now more than ever. Who cares if there were no true Cinderella teams. The ball went on without them and created a situation with the four best teams making it to San Antonio. Are you not entertained?
Nantz might be concerned but the game has evolved and will continue to do so over the course of time. Saying 'Things aren't how they used to be' keeps you stuck in the same place over time. There is a solution to make NIL and the transfer portal better. But that doesn't come by going backwards.
