Carter Gilmore’s journey from walk-on to key contributor hit a new high Saturday as the Wisconsin Badgers secured a 75-69 road win over Northwestern.

In his 121st career game, the senior forward out of Hartland (Wis.) delivered a career-best 15 points—all of which came in the second half—while helping Wisconsin erase an eight-point deficit against the Wildcats.

The moment wasn’t lost on head coach Greg Gard, who made sure to spotlight Gilmore’s perseverance.

“Enshrined as Carter Gilmore day, February 1,” Gard said. “Carter Gilmore, what a great example of why someone is a Wisconsin Badger. All you locals know his story, from walk-on to today. He's come the long, hard way, and really proud of him that he's persevered and continued to stay with it.”

Trailing 46-38 with just over 15 minutes to play, Gilmore provided the spark Wisconsin needed, drilling back-to-back threes before adding a layup and a putback in transition to put the Badgers ahead for good. His performance was met with an outpouring of support, both from his teammates and former players.

Sophomore combo guard John Blackwell summed it up simply on social media: “Gillyyy jamesss.”

Gilmore, who entered the game never having scored more than nine points, took a moment postgame to reflect on what the performance meant to him.

“I mean, it makes all the hard work and all the haters and all those comments worth it for sure,” Gilmore said

“I’m a true Wisconsin Badger. All I want to do is make the fans happy, so I was lucky and glad that I could do that today for sure.”
