Arkansas head coach John Calipari wasn't pleased with his team following Saturday's loss to Texas A&M.
After starting the month with a monumental win in Calipari's return to Kentucky, the Razorbacks have lost two tight games to top SEC opponents. Along with an 85-81 loss to Alabama, Kentucky fell 69-61 to the No. 8 Aggies on Saturday afternoon.
Arkansas dropped to 15-10 with a 4-8 conference record. Calipari isn't taking any moral victories from a close call on the road.
"Normally, you say you are what your record says you are," Calipari said, via Inside Arkansas. "But in this league, the way this is, you just got to get it going at the right time. And I thought we did. Alabama's really good, too. [Texas A&M] is really good. Guess what? We had a chance to beat both of them, but we didn’t. And for us to bust through, we’re going to have to beat somebody."
Before Saturday's loss, ESPN's Joe Lunardi picked Arkansas as one of his last four bubble teams to make the men's tournament. The Razorbacks have six more regular-season games to make their case, but Coach Cal doesn't want his players shrugging off Saturday's defeat.
"I wanted to make sure they weren't happy [thinking] we’re going to be OK," he said. "No. If we'd won that game, we're in the tournament."
Calipari abruptly raised his voice to shout the next sentence. He then returned to his normal speaking volume to question his team's toughness.
"So it's not OK to say we'll be all right!" Coach Cal exclaimed. "Now, we're going to have to go get somebody else. I didn't wanna put that on them because I've got some guys [who are] a little bit fragile."
Calipari lamented having to keep uplifting his players through adversity.
"I still love coaching these guys ... but I got to hold them accountable."
Describing a frustrating moment from Saturday's game, Calipari recalled a player coming to him to say, "My fault" after not correctly running the designed plan on an out-of-bounds pass.
"Your fault? No s***. We're watching," Calipari said.
The head coach will hope his message resonates when Arkansas stays on the road to play No. 1 Auburn on Wednesday night.
