Kansas Coach Bill Self Breaks Silence On Health Scare

After a scary health incident a few days ago, Kansas' Bill Self appears to be on the mend.

On Thursday night, reports surfaced that the Jayhawks coach had been hospitalized due to "some concerning symptoms" and later had to have two stents inserted into his heart.

"The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery," KU said in a statement. "He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon."

Now Self has issued a statement of his own to Rock Chalk Nation after undergoing the successful operation and being released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital today:

"I want to thank all the amazing doctors and nurses at LMH Health for the excellent care I received during my stay there," Self said, via ESPN's Jeff Borzello. "I feel strong and am excited to be home. Our team has had a productive summer and look forward to our batteries being recharged and prepping for this upcoming season."

This isn't the first time the Hall of Fame coach has had to deal with issues related to his heart. Back in 2023, Self missed both the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments after being hospitalized because of chest tightness and balance concerns.

That resulted in him undergoing a heart catheterization and having two stents put in to treat a pair of blocked arteries.

At 62 years old, Self is still a fairly young man but his recent health concerns have caused some to call for his retirement before things worsen.

Self signed a $53 million contract to remain with the Jayhawks two years ago which made him the highest-paid coach in men's college basketball at the time.

We certainly wish Coach Self the best as he continues his recovery and hope he's able to return to the sideline (safely) whenever he's ready.
