The Kansas Jayhawks started the year 7-0 and were ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll through the first five weeks of the college basketball season. Since then, they are just 12-9 overall, 10-7 in Big 12 play and have completely fallen out of the Top 25.

The struggles are real for the Jayhawks, and their remaining schedule doesn't get any easier. They'll face three ranked teams to end the regular season before the Big 12 tournament: vs. No. 10 Texas Tech, at No. 4 Houston and vs. No. 22 Arizona.

As a result, there's been chatter about whether head coach Bill Self could step away from the game after this season. If he does, he will join Virginia’s Tony Bennett, Indiana's Mike Woodson, Miami’s Jim Larranaga and Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton as high-profile coaches who have either called it a career or announced this is their final season.

During a recent podcast of "The Field of 68," college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman said he would not be shocked to see Self retire.

"I wouldn't be shocked," Goodman said. "Let's put it this way. I would not be shocked if Bill Self says, you know what? I'm good. 62. I got more money than..."

The NJ Advance Media asked Self about the chances of retiring after the 2024-25 season, and he responded with a one-word answer.

"No," he said over text on Wednesday.

Self has been the head coach at Kansas since 2003, guiding the Jayhawks to the NCAA Tournament every season except for the COVID-shortened year when they finished 28-3.

A two-time AP College Coach of the Year, Self has won two national championships, reached four Final Fours, and secured eight Big 12 tournament titles along with 16 Big 12 regular-season championships.

He was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.

Self and the Jayhawks will return to the court this Saturday when they take on Texas Tech. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN.
